Working Together To Be The Pollution Solution

Street sweeping will make a clean sweep to protect the ocean

One of the best ways to prevent pollutants from entering the ocean is to remove them from streets before rain carries them into the storm drain and the watershed. In recent months, the City has stepped up street-sweeping efforts, and the results have been tremendous. Our experience in Dana Point shows that street sweeping is effective in removing pollution. When sweeping was conducted twice a month, the monthly debris intake was 23 tons. Since sweeping was increased to a weekly basis, the monthly total increased to 46 tons of debris-more than 10 tons per week.

Rather than create mandatory no-parking zones, the City has asked residents not to park on their streets during street-sweeping days, generally the day after trash collection. The City also has produced street sweeping reminders in English and Spanish that will be placed on cars blocking the sweeping of streets. This reminder explains the importance of street sweeping and also reminds residents of the day and time sweeping occurs on their street. Residents and visitors who receive this notice will not have to pay any fines during a six-month voluntary compliance period. The City hopes that these notices will encourage voluntary cooperation and eliminate the need to levy fines and post mandatory no-parking signs on streets in the future.

Residents should note, however, that any existing posted no parking zones-such as those in Lantern Village-must still be obeyed. People who park on a street during a posted no-parking time or people who park in such a manner as to block the path of the street sweeper are subject to citation/fines.

To find out the day and time your street is swept -just scroll down to your street and find the street segment you live on. You will find the day and two-hour time zone that your street is swept.
